Learning Environment
Our Classroom
The Compass School is committed to providing a challenging academic curriculum and supporting children in realizing their educational potential. Our administrative and instructional environment is sensitive to the learning needs of each child and capable of responding quickly to maximize the learning potential of each child. The school is comprised of four multi-age/multi-year “steps”. This multi-year class configuration fosters a climate that allows differential progress tailored to the individual.
At the Navigator step students are engaged in many environmental, outside activities. Students learn to do research and present material in a variety of ways. They receive education in algebra and have a limited Spanish program. Students learn to analyze synthesize information. Students leave the 8th grade well prepared to enter a high school program.
The four multiage “steps” and their configurations are
Explorer – grades K/1 class size is 16 students/class
Discoverers – grades 2/3 class size is 18 students/class
Investigators- grades 4/5/6 class size is 19 students/class
Navigators – grades 7/8 class size is 20 students/class
The multiage approach allows a significant relationship to develop between teacher and student as well as between teacher and parent. The small class size allows for individualized instruction and attention.
The teaching team at each step delivers curriculum in center-based classrooms. Centers are developed around project-based units that are designed to provide students with meaningful, concrete learning experiences. Direct instruction is also provided to be sure that students are proficient in specific knowledge and skills.
