Director Job Description

General Description

The position of Director of the Compass School is designed for a person with an advanced degree or equivalent experience who has had experience in organizational leadership. It is expected that the person has prior experience working with children in a group setting. The position has eight distinct but interrelated components that contribute to the mission of the Compass School:

1. Provide visionary conceptual leadership for the Compass School.

2. Coordinate and manage the implementation of the day to day program at the Compass School.

3. Mentor, support, supervise and evaluate the Compass School Staff.

4. Be responsible for the fiscal management of the Compass School.

5. Nurture and enhance positive relationships with the children and families of the Compass School community.

6. Foster and maintain communication with the educational systems in Rhode Island.

7. Foster and maintain collaborations within the community at large.

8. Provide the general administrative leadership for the Compass School.

 

Specific Responsibilities of the Director

1. Provide visionary conceptual leadership for the Compass School.

a. Foster the ongoing development of a model program based on exemplary practices as identified in current literature in an atmosphere that encourages innovation and experimentation.

b. Identify goals for continued growth and development consistent with the vision, philosophy, and mission of the Compass School.

2. Coordinate and manage the implementation of the day to day program at the Compass School.

a. Coordinate the development and implementation of guidelines for curriculum, assessment, and guidance based on the Compass School philosophy.

b. Coordinate the teacher’s work in planning and implementing the day to day program consistent with the general program philosophy.

c. Serve as a curriculum leader and resource person in developing the educational aspect of the program.

d. Be ultimately responsible for students’ academic achievement.

3. Mentor, support, supervise and evaluate the Compass School Staff.

a. Chair search committees for hiring the Teachers and other staff.

b. Provide direct supervision for the Teachers through regular meetings, policy and procedure development, and ongoing feedback.

c. Mentor the staffs’ implementation of the children’s program through observation, regular staff meetings, and individual consultation when appropriate.

d. Foster the professional development of the staff through individual consultation, setting individual goals, specific programming, encouraging conference attendance, and so forth.

e. Conduct an annual evaluation of each professional staff member using appropriate information such as personal observations, systematic feedback from parents and students, teacher’s self-reflection, and input from others as relevant.

4. Be responsible for the fiscal management of the Compass School.

a. Develop an annual projected budget in consultation with the Business Administrator and the Development Committee which reflects expected income, program expenses, and necessary capital equipment needs.

b. Monitor income and expenses throughout the year to ensure comparability with projections.

c. Meet with the Business Administrator and the Development Committee to coordinate fiscal management of the program.

d. Work with the Compass School Council to support development efforts.

5. Nurture and enhance positive relationships with the children and families of the Compass School community.

a. Develop, in consultation with professional staff and the Compass School Council, appropriate written materials about the Compass School and its goals for families enrolled in the program.

b. Meet regularly with a Compass School Council.

c. Organize a Parent Education Series or other parent outreach activities as appropriate.

d. Organize and attend social functions with the Compass School families .

e.Be available to meet individually with Compass School families about their questions and concerns.

6. Foster and maintain communication with the educational systems in Rhode Island.

a. Represent the Compass School with the State Department of Education.

b. Represent the Compass School at appropriate professional meetings at state, regional, and national level.

c. Represent the Compass School on the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools.

d. Participate in professional development activities.

7. Foster and maintain collaborations within the community at large.

a. Represent the Compass School in the local community.

b. Develop relationships with environmental education groups including Save the Bay, The Coastal Institute, The Nature Conservancy, The Audobon Society, etc.

c. Develop relationships with organizations working for social justice such as Habitat for Humanity, the Peace Corp, South County Community Action, etc.

8. Provide the general administrative leadership for the Compass School.

a. Work collaboratively with the Compass School Council.

b. Work collaboratively with the Compass School’s sponsoring agency.

c. Ensure, in conjunction with the Compass School Council, that the Compass School meets all state licensing requirements.

d. Develop, in consultation with the Compass School Council, specific policies and procedures for, enrollment, safety, illness, and injuries.

e. Oversee the provisions in all reports required by the state.

f. Maintain student records as required by the state.

 




Teacher Job Description

General Description:

The position of teacher at the Compass School is designed for a person with a Bachelors Degree who is certified by the State of Rhode Island in early childhood, elementary, or middle school education. It is expected that the person have prior experience working with children, preferably in a school setting. The position has 5 distinct but interrelated components that contribute to the missions of the Compass School:

1. Develop and implement the day to day educational program for children at the Compass School.

2. Communicate with families of the Compass School.

3. Participate in the governance and evaluation of the Compass School.

4. Be aware of and contribute to program support and record keeping requirements.

5. Participate in ongoing personal and professional development.

 

Specific Responsibilities of the Teachers

1. Develop and implement the day to day educational program for children at the Compass School.

  1. Plan and implement, in collaboration with the Step teaching team, curriculum for a multi-age group of children consistent with developmentally appropriate educational practice as articulated by the Compass School mission and philosophy.
  2. Work collaboratively with other teachers, families, community members and the Director to develop and implement projects.
  3. Facilitate the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and reflective development of children at the Compass School.
  4. Use ongoing assessment to monitor children’s growth, development, strengths, and needs.
  5. Give input to the Director in the development of policies and procedures and assist in their implementation.
  6. Be accountable for fostering students’ academic progress.
  7. Be responsible for and participate in extra-curricular Compass School activities on an on-going basis.
  8. Develop long term relationships with children and their families by serving as the primary mentor for each child in their group.

2. Communicate with families of the Compass School.

  1. Informally interact with parents on a frequent and regular basis to provide information on their child’s progress and to provide support as needed.
  2. Integrate parents’ contribution to the curriculum as appropriate.
  3. Serve as a resource person to parents.
  4. Conduct periodic parent/teacher conferences so that adults can share information about children. Prepare written narrative reports for this purpose.
  5. When the Director is unavailable, provide information to persons interested in the program.
  6. Attend Open Houses and other family functions.

3. Participate in the governance and evaluation of the Compass School.

  1. Attend and participate in staff meetings to discuss various aspects of the program.
  2. Accept a rotating assignment to serve on the Compass School Council.
  3. Contribute to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of the Compass School.
  4. Administer state mandated assessments.

4. Be aware of and contribute to program support and record keeping requirements.

  1. Notify the Director when consumable materials and supplies are needed and participate in ordering, as needed.
  2. Assist in training temporary staff such as assistants, volunteers, and substitutes.
  3. Communicate maintenance and repair needs to the appropriate parties.
  4. Maintain records of child attendance, health and accidents, and report to the Director as necessary.
  5. Show flexibility in meeting the Compass school’s scheduling and emergency needs.
  6. Be responsible for the day to day upkeep of the classroom.

  1. Conduct ongoing self-evaluation to identify areas for continual improvement.

Special Education Teacher Job Description

General Description

The position of special education teacher at the Compass School is designed for a person with a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution who is certified by the State of Rhode Island in early childhood, elementary, or middle school special education. It is expected that the person have prior experience working with children, preferably in a school setting. The position has 5 distinct but interrelated components that contribute to the missions of the Compass School:

1. Develop an effective instructional program to accommodate individual needs and varying disabilities using a continuum of service delivery models.

2. Communicate with families of the Compass School.

3. Participate in the governance and evaluation of the Compass School.

4. Be aware of and contribute to program support and record keeping requirements.

5. Participate in ongoing personal and professional development.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Develop an effective instructional program to accommodate individual needs and varying disabilities using a continuum of service delivery models.

  1. Serve as special education case manager for students as assigned.
  2. Plan and implement, in collaboration with the Special Education Coordinator, other special educators, lead teachers and parents/guardians, individual educational plans (IEPs) for children with varying disabilities that are consistent with developmentally appropriate educational practices, local procedural guidance, State and Federal IDEA regulations, and the Compass School mission and philosophy.
  3. Document the IEP including measurable goals and objectives as required under IDEA regulations.
  4. Work collaboratively with other teachers, special educators, and families to implement each child’s IEP.
  5. Use ongoing assessment to monitor children’s growth, development, strengths, and needs.
  6. Be accountable for fostering students’ academic progress.

Teacher Assistant Job Description

General Description

The position of teacher assistant at the Compass School is designed for a person who meets the State of Rhode Island eligibility requirements for teaching assistants. It is expected that the person have prior experience working with children, preferably in a school setting.

1. Collaborate with teaching and administrative staff to implement the day-to-day educational program at the Compass School.

2. Assist teachers in classroom management and instruction.

3. Provide individual student support (regular and/or special education) as assigned.

4. Provide non-classroom (lunch, recess, field trips, dismissal) support and supervision for students as assigned.

5. Support the mission and philosophy of the Compass School.
